Sacred Harp Singing in the New York City Area
The Brooklyn Sing, located in the beautiful Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn, was originally
held at Joe Beasley's house in Jackson Heights, Queens. Joe was instrumental in reviving
Sacred Harp singing in the Northeast. When Joe passed away in 1995, his sing was taken over
by Richard Schmeidler and moved to Brooklyn Heights. Richard eventually made a move to
Boston, and the sing is now under the tutelage of Brenda Peña, a good friend of Joe. This is why
the sing is also known as as The Joe Beasley Memorial Sing. True to the tradition set forth by
Joe, this sing features a pot-luck dinner, so you're encouraged to bring a dish to share.
